Back to basics: Data science

New to the tech world and don’t know where to start? Well, a career in tech can be hugely rewarding, and there are so many different roles you can go into with the right training. So, we’re putting together a ‘back to basics’ blog series. We’ll cover the basics of what courses we provide, what they mean and what kind of things you could be doing in a role linked to the course.

For the first in our ‘back to basics’ series, we’re looking at everything you need to know about Data Science. You can then see if that’s the route you’d like to explore more!

What is data science?

Data science is there to help businesses in loads of different ways. Pretty much every action taken on technology involves data. People working in data science use their knowledge and skills to support businesses. They’ll help make informed decisions and improving planning. Data scientists use their skills to look at insights and data to see how audiences and customers work. From there we can see customer attributes, and journeys, and make predictions on their next moves based on customer behaviour. They can also spot patterns in behaviour which can support sales but also to help increase customer safety.

How?

Data science incorporates statistics, maths, analytics, machine learning and more. You’ll also have to think about how data can be manipulated and used most efficiently.

What do you need to learn?

To get an entry-level role, our data science course teaches you what you need to know including;

  • Python Fundamentals
  • Data Science with Python: Introduction to Pandas
  • Data Science with Python: Introduction to Algorithms, Machine and Deep Learning
  • Introduction to Modelling and Data Visualisation
  • Big Data & Databases (SQL).

New to tech and don’t know what they are? Don’t worry! If you like what you’ve heard so far and decide to do a course, all these will become second nature.

Having these skills can help you start your journey into data science and with our practical tasks, you can get a feel for the kind of work you could be doing day-to-day.

What job could you get?

You could get a job in so many different settings. Your skills could support the retail industry, healthcare and medicine, science…there really is no limit as it’s used in most sectors!

There are different areas of data science you can hone in on such as being a data scientist, a data engineer, an analyst and much more.
